7 Coupled Craft Beer and Movies For Singles

by Splash Jones

Alright PriceTy Longworth...There is clearly something inherently flawed with your absolutist point of view on this subject matter: Valentine's Day is not just a holiday for those in relationships, but perhaps something to celebrate by the ladies and gentlemen who just might be spending it by themselves, or, hell, might not even be celebrating at all.  I'm gonna share seven local craft beers to pair alongside a handful of my favorite films to watch this year while the rest of the world is being penetrated by Cupid's Bow.  Let's go ahead and dedicate this list to anyone who has found themselves somewhere on the spectrum of being single, bitter, or apathetic about the consumer holiday we call "Valentine's Day".

-Legion Brewing's "Path to the Darkside" Oatmeal Porter-

Best Paired with The Empire Strikes Back

Roses are red  Violets are blue  So are light sabers I like beer... ... especially the "Path to the Darkside" Oatmeal Porter by Legion Brewing Co. which happens to sit really nicely with by far one of the strongest stories from the Star Warssaga, The Empire Strikes Back.

-NoDa Brewing's "Hop, Drop, 'N Roll IPA"-

Best Paired with Space Jam

There's something to be said about meeting your quota of nostalgia, at least once per year, if not more. Why not tap into your inner-Looney Toon, reach for a Hop Drop, and kick it to arguably the greatest and most ridiculous live action cartoon films of the 90's. Alternative Plan: listen to the soundtrack on repeat for literally one whole day.

-Sugar Creek Brewing's "Mocha Java Porter"-

Best Paired with The Big Lebowski

If you're not drinking something in the White Russian family during this Coen Brothers' cult classic then you're clearly out of your element. Mark it a ten - Sugar Creek's got a Mocha Java Porter for all you dudes-at-heart.

-Unknown Brewing's "Pre-Game Session Ale"-

Best Paired with The Sandlot

If you grew up in the 80's or 90's, The Sandlot was a right-of-passage to adulthood. One could even say it was the "Pre-Game" movie to some of the strongest coming-of-age sports films of our time. Trust me, you'll appreciate this session ale from Unknown Brewing FOR.EV.ER.

-Birdsong Brewing's "Jalapeño Ale"-

Best Paired with Nacho Libre

I ate some bugs, I ate some grass, I used my hand to grab a Jalepeño Ale from Birdsong, watch Nacho Libre, and it was the beeeaaaiissst!

-Triple C Brewing's "Baby Maker Double IPA"-

Best Paired with Honey, I Shrunk The Kids

Some of you may be wondering why I'd pair a double IPA from Triple C Brewing called "Baby Maker" with a family friendly movie such as Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. It's a fair question. For me, the bittersweet hoppiness of the beer helps me justify watching a bunch of tiny children spend almost two hours in an ant and bumble bee battlefield of a backyard while evading lawn mowers and giant human people. Does it still hold up as a great flick today? Damn right it does.

-Wooden Robot Brewing's "Winter Wit Belgian"-

Best Paired with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Nothing makes me feel so connected and disconnected in a simultaneous plane of existence as much as Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  It's only fair to have a frothy companion from Wooden Robot by my side while my mind is being erased over and over again.
